Police and soldiers of the black "homeland" of Bophuthatswana
clashed with thousands of white vigilantes today in chaotic gun
battles, and President Lucas Mangope was forced to abandon his
boycott of South Africa's first all-races elections.
Right-wing South African gunmen drove into Bophuthatswana to
protect Mangope, a staunch opponent of the elections, from
protesters and disaffected members of his security forces demanding
to participate in the vote. Before the gunmen left under an accord
brokered by South African military officers, at least 12 people had
been killed and scores injured.
Sporadic gunfights continued tonight in the twin towns of
Mmabatho and Mafikeng as troops from ...
