Article: White bears in Tibet may be albinos

LHASA: White animals reportedly identical in appearance to polar bears have been spotted by local people in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The sightings could be of great significance to the study of evolution in Tibet, experts said.

Puce, an old herdsman from the village of Qomo in Gerze County in Ngari Prefecture, was full of excitement when recalling his encounter with the mysterious animal.

"I was herding the sheep when suddenly I saw a white creature in the distance and thought it might be a snow leopard," said Puce, who uses just one name. "After a careful study, I found it was a big white bear quite identical to the polar bears."
