It's more than one-third of the way into their exhibition
season, and the Baltimore Orioles hope the team they'll be on
Opening Day doesn't resemble the team they've been so far. The early
stages of spring training have been disastrous for the pitching
staff, but the Orioles insist they're not fretting.
Ironically, the offseason free agent spending spree that
created such great expectations for the Orioles probably ensured
that the team would have a subpar spring.
This now is a club full of veteran, established players - and
established players have much less incentive to perform well during
spring training than youngsters fighting for major league jobs.
There aren't many jobs to be won ...
