WASHINGTON: As this week's suicide bombings have underscored, Turkey's close ties to the United States and Israel and its role as a secular Muslim state in the volatile Middle East have propelled it into the front line in the war on terrorism.

Although Ankara opposed the US invasion of Iraq and recently withdrew an offer to send troops to help with the post-war US occupation, its vulnerability was laid bare by a stunning series of catastrophic blasts in Istanbul - two on Thursday and two last Saturday.
