Once promoted by abortion rights advocates as a legislative
priority, a bill in Congress that would ban most state restrictions
on abortion is virtually dead, according to key proponents of the
measure.
While some abortion rights activists hope to revive the Freedom
of Choice Act in a future congressional session, they acknowledge
that their movement is now focused on ensuring that the health
reform package Congress passes includes pregnancy-related services.
"For all intents and purposes, it is dead because we've gone on
to more pressing priorities," Pamela J. Maraldo, president of the
Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said of the Freedom of
