A special Navy board recommended today that 29 senior midshipmen
be expelled from the U.S. Naval Academy for involvement in a 1992
cheating scandal and ordered that 42 others receive lesser
punishments.
The announcement followed a month of intense, back-to-back
hearings by the five-member special Honor Review Board called to
investigate the biggest cheating incident in the academy's 149-year
history. The panel considered 112 accused midshipmen and found that
71 committed honor violations involving cheating on the electrical
engineering exam given in December 1992. The panel cleared 35
midshipmen of all charges, and six others already had left the
academy for unrelated reasons.
