Chuck Bown, continuing to do more with substantially less than
his Winston Cup competitors, led an assault on the track record in
yesterday's opening round of time trials for the Food City 500 in
Bristol, Tenn.
Bown, one of 29 drivers who bettered the previous record at
Bristol International Raceway, turned a fast lap of 124.946 mph -
more than 2 mph swifter than the previous mark - to grab the top
starting spot for Sunday's 500-lap race.
It was yet another impressive accomplishment for Bown and the
plain black Ford Thunderbird he drives for owner Bobby Allison.
Allison has secured a few one-race deals for primary sponsors,
