The Public Broadcasting Service has withdrawn from negotiations
to co-finance a six-hour, $8 million sequel to "Tales of the City,"
the homosexual-themed miniseriesthat drew good ratings (for PBS)
and some controversy when it aired in January ...
PBS's decision against contributing up to $4 million toward the
production by Great Britain's Channel 4 was reached last week ...
Channel 4 had put up some $7 million, PBS about $1 million
for the original "Tales" ...
Armistead Maupin, who created "Tales" from his popular serial
that ran in the San Francisco Chronicle, claimed Friday that PBS
"knuckled under to conservative pressures" in withdrawing from
negotiations for the sequel, ...
