Article: Hostesses create smooth sailing for cruise ship passengers

HAMBURG: Some little problem always arises on board a cruise ship. It might be just misplaced sunglasses or a forgotten toothbrush, but whatever it is, it's good that there's someone available to take care of it.

But what do you call this member of the crew? There isn't really a standardized title. She used to be referred to as a sort of "auntie who takes care of things," but these days titles sound more dynamic, said Johann Zurnieden of the cruise ship committee of the German Travel Association.

"Sometimes they are called butler, sometimes concierge or hostess," said Zurnieden, director of Phoenix Travel, a travel agency
