Carl Preston McCartney, 71, a retired Army lieutenant colonel
who later worked as a civilian intelligence officer for the
Department of Defense in Washington, died April 11 at his home in
Redmond, Wash., after a heart attack.
Col. McCartney, a former resident of Alexandria, was born in
Clearfield County, Pa., and attended Washington-Jefferson College.
He served in the Army in Europe during World War II. Later, he
graduated from the University of Maryland and served in Army posts
in England, France, Germany, Japan, the Philippines and Okinawa.
He settled in the Washington area in 1963 and retired from the
