The urban transport system should be improved by giving more priority to the development of public transport, says a signed article in Yanzhao Metropolis News. An excerpt follows:

The Ministry of Construction said it aims to develop public transport so that it accounts for a third of the transport in the country's main cities within the next five years.

Currently, public transport accounts for a mere 10 per cent of the total transport in Chinese cities, while the same proportion is usually between 40 and 60 per cent in the big cities of Europe, Japan and South America.
