Index edges up

China's main stock index closed slightly higher yesterday. The Shanghai Composite Index climbed 1.09 percent to 3,173.02 points, after sliding nearly 3 percent in the morning session.

Turnover set a record high of 151.12 billion yuan on the Shanghai A-share market yesterday, because of heavy profit-taking.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 585 to 203. Lenders led the gains after the Industrial Bank Co reported a 54 percent increase in 2006 profit. The bank's shares rose 3.1 percent to 25.97 yuan.
