Chow can't be wooed towards Red Cliff

Chow Yun-fat's last-minute pullout from director John Woo's new Chinese epic Red Cliff threatened to split up one of Hong Kong cinema's most famous partnerships.

Woo (pictured right) made Chow an icon after casting him as a trench-coat wearing, gun-toting gangster in the 1986 Hong Kong classic A Better Tomorrow.

But Woo said Thursday that while Chow's withdrawal from Red Cliff dealt him a heavy blow, he still considered the actor a friend.

"At the time I felt a rather great sense of defeat. I felt at a loss," he said at a news conference to promote Red Cliff in Beijing.

However, asked if the move ended his and Chow's friendship, Woo said no.
