Urban congregations with historic churches needing million-dollar renovations often are faced with a choice: spend money on community services and church programs, or renovate.

With some good fortune and a lot of strategic planning, Calvary Baptist Church in downtown Washington has managed to do both. Tomorrow the church will rededicate its 125-year-old sanctuary, renovated for $2.8 million. But during the 19 months the work has taken, the congregation also has expanded its services to its downtown neighborhood in the heart of Chinatown.
