Urban congregations with historic churches needing
million-dollar renovations often are faced with a choice: spend
money on community services and church programs, or renovate.
With some good fortune and a lot of strategic planning, Calvary
Baptist Church in downtown Washington has managed to do both.
Tomorrow the church will rededicate its 125-year-old sanctuary,
renovated for $2.8 million. But during the 19 months the work has
taken, the congregation also has expanded its services to its
downtown neighborhood in the heart of Chinatown.
Chinese children with working parents spend the day playing,
eating and napping at the church's preschool. Outpatients from St.
