Article: Burma: We arrested 3,000 people

THE scale of Burma's brutal clampdown was revealed today as its military rulers said they had detained nearly 3,000 people and were still hunting for protesters who took part in pro-democracy demonstrations.

Nearly 500 remained in custody, said an official statement from the junta. "Those who led, got involved in and supported the unrest which broke out in September were called in and are being interrogated," the junta said on the front page of The New Light of Myanmar, a government mouthpiece.
