Olives have become a popular part of our everyday diet, not so
much in their original form but more for the oil extracted from
them.
While the origin of olive oil goes back as far 6,000 B.C.,
cultivation in America spread with its discovery in the mid-15th
century.
Fast forward a few centuries. Olive oil consumption in the United
States is booming and in the Windy City, a handful of shops now
specialize in the "liquid gold," as Homer called it.
Four Chicago brothers opened Old Town Oil, 1520 N. Wells, in
August. The store specializes in 100 percent extra virgin olive
oils, such as Picual (Spain), Nocellara (Italy) and Coratina
