No relationship between Test-playing countries has been so
unequal, so master-servant, as that between England and New Zealand -
until now. When the Test series begins in Christchurch on Wednesday,
the sides will be on a par, England in fourth place in the
International Cricket Council Test Championship, New Zealand in
fifth, and both will be content with a draw in the opening game.
New Zealand, the Test-playing country with by far the smallest
population, have brought about this change by making the most of the
little they have. England, given plenty of resources, do not make the
