In the packed conference centre at Church House last weekend,
Penny Russell-Smith, the Queen's press secretary, was asked by a
journalist whether Camilla Parker Bowles would be attending the Queen
Mother's funeral.
The question, at the press conference to announce arrangements for
the Queen Mother's funeral, had been anticipated and Miss Russell-
Smith took it in her stride. "Yes, Mrs Parker Bowles will be going to
the service as a member of the congregation," she replied in a
deadpan voice. "She knew the Queen Mother well over the years and it
is therefore appropriate that she should come."
