YELLOW CHICKWEED sways gently in the salty breeze where once only the most fashionable of the holidaymaking classes sashayed to elegant cocktail parties. Welcome to the Midland Grand Hotel, Morecambe: a British architectural treasure now deserted, derelict and facing demolition.

It is Britain's largest and, arguably, most significant art deco building, designs from which will be featured in an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London next year.

In the 1930s, its sleek curves overlooking the sweeping expanse of Morecambe Bay and the lush Lakeland hills beyond were an optimistic statement of Modernism, the futuristic movement in art, architecture and interior design.
