It is a singular achievement that the British Cheese Awards, under
the aegis of the redoubtable Antipodean Juliet Harbutt, are
celebrating their ninth birthday at the end of September. From modest
beginnings, the awards have become a three-day event featuring more
than 400 British cheeses. Most people are just about able, according
to Juliet, to name five; and many of them include Brie and Edam.
On September 27, a group of amateurs, food writers and chefs will
gather in Chipping Campden to pit their palates against those of the
real experts - the makers, sellers and affineurs. Some will have
