Elias Motsoaledi, 69, a founder of the guerrilla wing of the
African National Congress, died in Johannesburg May 10 a few hours
after Nelson Mandela, with whom he was imprisoned on Robben Island,
was inaugurated as South Africa's first black president.
The cause of death was not reported, but Mr. Motsoaledi had
been ill for several months and had declined a place on the ANC's
list of parliamentary candidates.
"The African National Congress, on behalf of all its leaders
and members, pays tribute to a man whose life was the struggle and
who lived just long enough to see a new South Africa born," the ANC
said in a statement.
