British politics was thrown into turmoil today by the sudden
death from a heart attack of John Smith, leader of Britain's
opposition Labor Party.
Smith had led a resurgence in the Labor Party's popularity by
moving the party to the right and loosening its traditional ties to
Britain's big labor unions.
A 55-year-old Scottish lawyer, Smith was considered likely to
lead his party to victory in the next general election, which will
probably be held in 1996 or 1997.
The rival Conservative Party, which has been in power since
1979, has become increasingly unpopular after tax boosts last month
and a series of political blunders and sexual and financial
scandals.
