Louisa Woodley has lived all her 78 years in and around this Rift Valley farming town, watching as the wildlife on the plains gave way to human settlement and automobiles replaced the ox cart that she used to ride to school.

Her children want her to leave, to make a new home in South Africa, but Woodley said she'll stay on "a little bit longer," tending lovingly to her collection of five dogs, 30 chickens and the pet fish she keeps in her bathtub.
