Dominicans went to the polls today amid immediate charges of
widespread voting irregularities in a contest dominated by Joaquin
Balaguer, the blind 87-year-old incumbent, and Jose Francisco Pena
Gomez, who would be the nation's first black president this century.
Both camps projected their candidates winning by very narrow
margins, but there were no official results and neither proclaimed
victory.
The Dominican election is being watched closely in Washington
and neighboring Haiti for its possible effect on an international
embargo designed to force the military command in Port-au-Prince to
allow the return of ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide and
restoration of democratic rule.
