Your correspondent who complains that air travel is a polluting
luxury (Letters, February 15) misses the point. Air travel is public
transport, and all forms of public transport, air, rail, bus, ship,
tram and underground, are exempt from VAT.
As for taxing aviation fuel, other forms of public transport are
treated comparably. There is no fuel tax for shipping, only 3p a
litre for trains ...
