`You wan' a sting with your Ting?" the barman asked. "CSR comin'
up." (Translation: would you like a shot of alcohol in your lemonade?
Here's a Cane Spirit Rothschild.) CSR is a clear, rum-like spirit,
brewed from sugar cane not molasses and therefore less likely to give
you a hangover. Or so they say. When served on the rocks with the
Caribbean lemonade Ting, it slips down nicely and then sneaks up and
clouts you over the head. It's unique to St Kitts.
As is much else besides. This Caribbean island of 30,000 people
has somehow escaped the ravages of mass tourism and remained as
funky, down-to-earth and hospitable as you might dare to hope. St
