Jacques Lemaire has a Stanley Cup ring for every finger,
earning eight as a player and two as an assistant general manager.
But he wears the one earned in 1977, when he and the Montreal
Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins.
"They said they were going to beat us in four games," Lemaire
said, a thin smile washing over his sun-drenched face outside the
New Jersey Devils practice rink here.
The Canadiens - and by extension, Lemaire - had been
challenged. A man who prefers to keep his verbiage as low as the
goals-against average, Lemaire didn't need to say that the Canadiens
and Lemaire answered the challenge by sweeping the Bruins.
