They knew their glimpse would be fleeting, that the cortege
would come and go in a blur, and still, just to see it was enough.
The white police motorcycles roared by first, then the squad cars,
then the black limousine accompanying the long, sleek hearse, and
finally the six limousines and four mini-buses bearing family
members and friends.
Gathered behind ropes along Memorial Drive, about 2,000 people
watched silently yesterday as the procession turned onto the
half-mile road leading into Arlington National Cemetery. Under a
blistering sun, they paid sad tribute and secured one last memory of
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.
