THE TOWN of Punta Gorda resembled a war zone yesterday, with whole buildings crumbled, roofs shredded, trees felled and a carpet of splinters and nails lying across roads.

In the wake of Hurricane Charley, live power cables dangled in the path of traffic, which picked its way slowly through the chaos in almost funereal fashion as residents returned to their homes to discover the worst.

Hundreds of people remained unaccounted for and at least 15 people were confirmed dead.

Punta Gorda's emergency operations centre had its roof blown off, as did a hurricane shelter where 1,200 people were huddled.
