This was an important statement from Stade Francais. They may be
the French champions and riding tolerably high in the league this
season, but their injury list going into the game was horrendous.
Brian Liebenberg, Ignacio Corleto and Pieter De Villiers, all
internationals and all regular starters, were hors de combat for
Gloucester's visit.
The situation was so serious that the Italian Bergamasco brothers
were forced to turn out in unaccustomed positions. Mauro, a flanker,
was pressed into service on the wing, and Mirco, a wing, found
himself in the centre. In the context of those hardships and a
Gloucester side that came out firing, their victory was very, very
impressive.
