Article: Racial tensions halt dispersal of asylum seekers around UK Programme suspended in towns and cities after clashes with members of local communities

THE GOVERNMENT has been forced to stop sending asylum seekers to cities and towns across Britain after being warned by the police that its policy is creating racial tension and violence.

Among the places where the dispersal of refugees has been halted are Derby, Burnley and Nelson in Lancashire, Bootle on Merseyside, and large parts of Manchester, Nottingham and Doncaster.

According to the most recent figures, for the end of 2003, these areas had at least 6,100 asylum seekers between them. The Government had hoped to send more, but admitted that it has been forced to stop because of the reaction of the local communities.
