Veteran actress Mikel Sarah Lambert won't soon forget getting the invitation to play Lear at the Washington Shakespeare Company.

"{Director} Chris Henley called and said, `We're doing "Lear" at the end of the season,' " says Lambert, who plays Shakespeare's tragic king as a tempestuous queen.

"And I interrupted him and said, I'm so flattered you called, and I have been so lucky because I've played all three daughters in my career, but in my current... maturity, I just don't think I can do that again.

"And Chris said, `Well, we weren't thinking about the daughters. We're talking about the parent.' "
