IF THERE has been a more important Test match in living memory
than the one scheduled to start at Trent Bridge on Thursday, it can
only be the Oval Test of 1953, when England regained the Ashes after
19 years, an even longer interlude than the current one of 16 years.
The home series of 1972 and 1981 were ding-dongers, too, but England
held the Ashes in both cases, a considerable advantage. This time
England have to win at least one of the last two matches and cannot
afford to lose the other.
Little did an indigent piano teacher realise what she had started
when, in the winter of 1882-3, she burnt a bail - according to the
most reliable version of the legend - and presented the ashes ...
