Earlier this year Rose Marie Bravo, the 54-year-old chief executive of Burberry, the luxury goods brand, was named by Forbes magazine as the 63rd most powerful woman in the world, ahead of both the Queen and Louise Frchette, the deputy secretary-general of the United Nations.

It is little wonder, then, that shares in Burberry fell 6 per cent in two days - wiping pounds 90m off the company's valuation - when it was revealed that Bravo is likely to step down next year.
