COMPETITION in the current account market has never been fiercer with banks dangling ever-more generous enticements in a bid to grab customers from rival providers.

Abbey recently announced that it will pay a headline-grabbing 6 per cent on credit balances, albeit it for a limited time only. Not to be outdone, Alliance & Leicester announced its own "new and improved'' current account package offering an overdraft rate of just 5.9 per cent.

With such rates on offer, current account customers can make substantial savings when compared with the deals on offer from the "big four'' high street banks.
