'I was so relieved about your article,'' writes Marelle Clements,
a teacher from Rickmansworth. "I thought it was just me - that I'd
somehow slipped into a parallel universe, or perhaps hell, when I
wasn't paying attention.''
The article to which Marelle refers concerned the appalling
treatment of the 1m-plus members of the 20-odd book clubs run by Book
Club Associates (BCA), part of the Bertelsman publishing empire. Her
letter was just one of an unprecedented number sent by readers in
response to a piece published in this section at the beginning of
last month.
The letters tell of phone calls routinely unanswered or
