On Tuesday evening at Canary Wharf, a beautiful Cuban woman will
be trying to extract large sums of money from the pockets of the
wealthy. Eglise Gutierrez, possessor of a sublime soprano voice, is
taking part in a recital intended to raise funds for an opera house,
not the Royal one in Covent Garden but a rather more modest
establishment in southern Ireland.
Since 1951, the seaside town of Wexford has hosted an annual opera
festival from the small theatre that sits unprepossessingly among
tightly packed houses on a narrow street. It stages works rarely
performed elsewhere for audiences that combine local residents with
