Hedge funds are viewed as the glamour toys of the investment
world, curious devices not everyone understands beyond the notion
that they are somehow "risky'' but still make millions of pounds of
profit. They are also the playthings of billionaires, it seems, the
tools by which tycoons shift vast sums of money to exotic offshore
destinations such as Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.
Hedge fund managers find this view very vexing. They argue that
hedge funds are not the risky volatile investments people imagine.
Their cause is not helped, however, when hedge funds are fined by the
