The first time I stayed in a Parisian apartment I was 14, on the
first of many school exchange programmes, shy and gawky but thrilled
at my good fortune. I got Paris and a superb room with a view of the
Eiffel Tower in a swanky abode in St-Germain, while my rather
unlucky French counterpart got a sleepy Buckinghamshire village,
shepherd's pie and my father's schoolboy-French rendition of Monty
Python's dead parrot sketch. There were tears.
Giving my hair a swift brush in the lift up to the sixth-floor of
an apartment block in Montparnasse, memories of meeting those French
hosts come flooding back. Will I like it here and will I like them?
