WE ALL, I'm sure, noticed the drop in temperature last week,
sufficient to deliver a couple of widespread ground frosts on
Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
Nothing unusual about that, of course, at the beginning of
October. In fact, daytime temperatures held up well, and with a
couple of warm nights towards the weekend, October so far is running
about 1 degree C above the long-term average.
Arguably, the main feature of the week's weather was its wetness.
This and the relative warmth were a consequence of the south to south-
westerly wind that has persisted since late September, drawing warm
but moist air across the British Isles from sub-tropical latitudes of
