We have to change the flight time for tomorrow,'' says the tycoon
to his pilot. "We are collecting somebody from Paradise.'' Welcome to
Barbados. The so-called Platinum Coast has become Britain's
equivalent of the Hamptons, on Long Island - a resort where houses
change hands for tens of millions of pounds. Officially the most
expensive place on the market is Nelson Gay, a beach-front, Palladian
style villa with two acres of land; asking price $25 million ( pounds
13 million - all Barbados property prices are in US dollars). But
even at that sort of figure, there is not enough property to satisfy
the boom in extremely rich people wanting a place in the sun.
