As far as Rudolf Pomaroli is concerned, folks in the Alpine
province of Tyrol should vote no in Sunday's referendum on joining
the European Union simply because of the apples.
"Five commissioners sitting in Brussels will decide how big our
apples will have to be," Pomaroli said as he waved a small apple in
the air before a small crowd at the Zillertal Cafe one night last
week. "They will have to be bigger than 65 millimeters {2.56 inches
in diameter} and we can't do anything about it."
Pomaroli spoke after his colleague, Josef Bertsch, complained
that joining the EU would result in an increase in truck traffic
from Germany through Tyrol's picturesque Inn River Valley on down to
