BRITISH TROOPS have been placed on high alert in Iraq amid fears of an upsurge of violence in the wake of Saddam Hussein's execution.

Commanders have been warned that coalition forces across the country face a series of suicide attacks in protest at the former dictator's hanging.

Security at all bases has been intensified but British commanders have insisted that patrols will not be cancelled, although soldiers will be told to be extra vigilant. Troops have been warned that the main threat is from roadside bombs.
