And so it came to pass that President Clinton last night
recited haiku:
"Nearing autumn's close/ my neighbor/ how does he live/ I
wonder," the president said, quoting the Japanese poet Basho. "May
your majesties' visit," he said to the Emperor and Empress of Japan,
at the first White House state dinner of the Clinton administration,
"provide new answers to that question and bring our peoples closer
still."
Theirs may be the Chrysanthemum Throne, but for the imperial
couple, everything was coming up roses. Literally.
They joined the Clintons and 173 guests in a tent draped with
thousands of roses in the Rose Garden outside the Oval Office. "Our
day with them has been so wonderful," ...
