David Cameron, whose constituency lies in Oxfordshire, is unlikely
to go canvassing in the Devon village of Budleigh Salterton. But if
he does, he should be wary of knocking on the door of Peter and Ann
German. The Germans moved to the village for two reasons: partly so
they could see the sea from their bedroom, and partly so that their
14-year-old daughter, Lizzie, could attend Colyton Grammar School. In
contrast to the Conservative Party's recent indecision about the
value of grammar schools, the Germans are huge fans of what, on A-
level results, is the most successful grammar school in the country.
