SPANISH FISHERMEN have outraged conservationists by killing up to
one in six of
the killer whales that live in and around the Strait of Gibraltar.
The Sunday Telegraph has obtained pictures that show a killer
whale on the deck of a fishing boat after it met its death in the
channel separating Europe and Africa. The picture is the first visual
evidence of the darker side of the tuna fishing industry in the
Mediterranean.
The slaughter of the mammals has been condemned by
conservationists, who claim that the fishermen are selling the whale
meat to Japan, where it is considered a delicacy. Harpoons and rifles
are used by fishermen to stop killer whales hunting the tuna, which
