Article: Church turns to gospel of John Lewis to fill pews

JOHN LEWIS has kept customers loyal with the promise that its goods are never knowingly undersold.

Now, the Church of England has turned to the upmarket department store in the hope that retail skills will help it "sell" God and get more people into church.

Clergy have been sent on motivational courses designed to make their congregations better at welcoming people who would not normally step foot inside a church.

The advice for priests ranges from smiling more to making sermons less boring, running kick boxing or yoga classes to make outsiders feel more comfortable and even providing postcodes so that people can find churches by satellite navigation.
