In the avalanche of pre-digital recordings reissued on CD in the past 10 years, one of the century's major conductors has been curiously underrepresented. Pierre Monteux (1875-1964) has not been totally ignored, but his work has had only a small fraction of the attention given to such conductors as Furtwangler, von Karajan and Toscanini, who generated a kind of carefully cultivated mystique based only in part on their musical skills.
