WE HAD NEGOTIATED AN itinerary for our long-awaited getaway
after careful study of a stack of brochures and more than a few
phone calls. It hadn't been easy. Our plan was the kind of
compromise that keeps a marriage healthy and suspenseful.
My own tastes are for rock-and-roll and hamburgers; my wife,
Laura, prefers Bruckner's Seventh Symphony and filet with bearnaise
sauce. You get the idea. "Look," she'd say, eagerly holding up a
brochure. "A 19th-century plantation that offers a five-course
gourmet dinner!" "Yes, but what is there to do there?" I'd ask.
We'd reached an uneasy truce in the battle of the brochures with a
decision to go to a place I liked, then to a place she liked, then ...
