Stanley T. Sigman, who helped build AT&T and its predecessors
into the nation's largest wireless company, will retire as chief
executive of the mobile unit and be replaced by Ralph de la Vega.
Sigman, 60, began his career in 1965 as a stockman for
Southwestern Bell Telephone in Hereford, Tex. In his 42 years at
AT&T, he helped start SBC's mobile business in the 1980s and oversaw
the creation of Cingular Wireless in 2001. He will stay until the
end of the year to help with the transition, AT&T said today.
De la Vega, 55, will be charged with increasing the company's
63.7 million wireless customers and expanding services such as
